Noorderhaaks is a small island in the NorthSea. In the past it was infamous and known as a hazard to all ships. Quite a lot of ships were wrecked on this big sandbank; smashed to pieces by the poundering surf.

This tells something about the conditions you could meet there as a seakayakker. In a NW-wind it is therefor not recommended to circumnavigate it, for conditions can be too challenging; especially on the NW-side.

So you have to take into account that there is a realistic chance planned trips must be cancelled. Because of this I never made this trip before.
However today I was lucky; my kayakclub planned a tour there and the easterly 5 Bft.-wind did not stop us this time.
The only thing was that we could face rough water on our way back in the Marsdiep where, at that time, a strong current against the 5Bft.wind can cause quite a heavy sea.

But lets first start the trip. Rob, our captain, caused all of us (13 persons) to rise early: at 5.00h in the morning, for he figured out that 8.30h was the best time to start paddling today.
The weather was beautifull and the morningwind did its very best to cool us down while dressing.

Once we were armoured we enjoyed the following, choppy sea in the Marsdiep, building up slowly until we met Noorderhaaks where it became able to surf now and then.
After rounding the sandbank the waves were gone, except for the surf on some underwater sandbanks, which surfaced almost because of the low tide.
During a short rest on a sandbank, which was not yet marked on our maps, we registrated the coordinates of it: 52°59,02" & 4°38,798" (I mark it on the map later).
Now we started the leg of the tour where you could meet the poundering surf in case of a NW-wind. Of course there was no problem today, but the sea was choppy and a little bit nervous. I can imagine wat happens here in a NW-gale.

While paddling Wietse, our bird-watcher, spots a Northern gannet (NL:Jan van Gent)(latin:Morus bassanus of Sula bassana) ; a bird seldom seen this time of the year in the Netherlands. After looking better we finally spotted 9 of these beautifull birds. Wietse is very enthousiastic about it and can´t be stopped looking for more.

At the time we reached shore we encountered the phenomenon of fall-winds: the easterly wind coming over the dunes. Allthough these dunes are not very high, the effect is remarkable because the windstrength increases quite a lot there.

We managed to reach shore before the current changes direction. Rob calculated this time of arrival very tigth to prevent starting even earlier today: well done Rob. Now we had all the time of the world to rest and we went to a small beach restaurant there, called "paal 9"; Disturbing us because it was located at "paal10", a marked spot on the beach.

Allthough we could theoretically leave at 14.30-15.00h the latest, most of the participants started redressing again at 13.30. So about 14.00h we started our journey back. The sea had become quiet and we wondered if we migth be lucky and encounter some waves in the Marsdiep. There were much less waves than we expected to be there and only in the south part, after traversing the current, we enjoyed some waves. Probably the current was at the end of its tide-cycle and not as strong anymore, which could even have been effected by the wind, blowing easterly for the last few days already and having influenced the waterlevel.
After reaching shore again nothing more can be talled than that the end was unexpected for Chris, one of the participants, who´s car was crashed by the bus of a marine-officer, driving backwards while not noticing him.
Nevertheless everybody enjoyed today. They all did just fine! smile

DETAILS: wind East 5Bft.; temp. 20°C; watertemp. 12°C; waveheigth.± 30-40cm; distance: ± 29km; sigth: reasonably good, sunny; Gear: Paddling the Vestvika, the kayak I am currently testing.
(I must confess that I thougth about taking another kayak with me today because of the expected wave-mess in the Marsdiep. However it turned out just fine)
